Ontario Bilingual Conference
Introduction and Background Information
The first Ontario Bilingual and Bi-cultural Education Conference was hosted by the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation in co-opertation with the Ontario Indian Cultural Education Centers. The primary aim of the conference was to identify the needs and priorities for native language development and retention.
Invitations and letters of information were sent out to band offices, friendship centers, educational institutions, community groups, organizations, and government agencies.
Approximately 200 people attended the workshops. It was generally agreed by all who attended that there is a great need and concern and a great deal of work needs to be accomplished if our native languages are to survive and flourish. Everyone agreed that we as Indian people must work together to insure the revitalization of Ontario's native languages.
